.
......".:co, -'

vVHEHEAS the California Highway Commission ha.s
heretofore assured representatives of Redwood City and other
communities in San Mateo County that $661,880 would be appropriated
for the biennium of 1939-1941 for the purchase of property necessary
to widen El Camino Real between Broadway in Redwood City and the
southerly boundary line of San Ma teo COUll ty; ,and

WHEREAS this widening project and the re-Paving
of said highway is one of the most vitally necessary undertakings
in this State; and

WHEREAS the City of Redwood City, and other communities
in South San Mateo County for a long period, which exceeds fifteen
years, have prevented property owners on El Camino Real from
making full use of their property by ordinances establishing
set-back lines in order to minimze the cost of the ultimate widen-
ing of said El Camino Real, and the continuance of such set-back
lines amounts and has amounted for many years to a deprivation of
property without present compensation therefor and has also
tended for many years to discourage and even prevent the improvement
of property fronting on said El Camino Real by reason of the in-
accessibility of business property constructed in conformity with
said set-back lines; and

WHEREAS the City Council of the City of Redwood City
has been recently advised that the State Highway Commission has
curtailed said appropriation to the extent of $150,000 or there-
abouts and said City Council is advised and believes that any
substantial curtailment in said appropriation will render it im-
possible to complete within said biennium the acquisition of
property necessary for said widening project and therefore still
further and longer burden the property owners whose property faces
on said El Camino Real, and will also prolong the maintenance of
the "bottleneck" now and for many years existing on this heavily
travelled thoroughfare between Redwood City and Palo Alto; and

WHEREAS any postponment beyond the present biennit~
of the acquisition of property necessary for said widening project
would be a grave injustice to the people of the State of California
who have occasion to use said portion of El Camino Real, to the
property owners along said highway, and would be detrimental to
the safety of motorists and others who use said highway,

NOW THEREIt'ORE BE IT RESOLVED by the Ci ty Council of
said City of Redwood City that the attention of the State Highway
Commission be directed to the absolute necessity of appropriating
sufficient funds in the present biennium to acquire all property
needed for said widening project so that the full width of right
of way for such project may be owned by the State of California, and
all improvements now impinging thereon be removed during said
biennium to the end that during the prasan t biennium, or not later
than the next succeeding biennium paving of said widened highway
may be completed.

FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be
sent to t.nA (;Ql;f'f"IT'n-l 0 ~+-~+-.a 'Q"~ ".'\.-........~~ ('I___~ __~ ~.
