<br /> RECOMMEN�ATION
<br /> Approve, by motion, Amendment No. 2 to the Li�e PerFormance Agreement with Zappe
<br /> Italian Family Circus for an amount no� to exceed $75,�00, and author#ze the Executive
<br /> Director to execute Amendment No. 2.
<br /> BACKGR4UND
<br /> Per the Live Performance Agreement dated September 15, 2008 fihe Zoppe Italian
<br /> Famiiy Circus will retum to the parkin� fot adjacent to fhe Main Library in downtown
<br /> Redwood City this fa11 from October 15 through the 25�'. The Zoppe Family Circus is
<br /> held in a 450-seat tent with one-ring that honors the historical Qld-World Italian Circus
<br /> tradition fea#uring acrobatics, eques#rian showmanship, canines, c(owns, and audience
<br /> participation.
<br /> Last year, the Agency entered into a $50,40a [..�ve Performance Agreemen�with Zoppe
<br /> Family Circus #or eighfi shows in October 2048. A total of 3,436 people attended the
<br /> performances with an a�erage of 433 attendees per show. The Agency contributed an
<br /> additional $25,��0 �or marketing and production expenses such as posters, hotels, tent
<br /> remova(, and clean up for a �otal e�en# cost of $75,oao. The ticket sales and
<br /> sponsorship contributions were about $4�,4a0. Thus the net Agency contribution to
<br /> host Zoppe was approximately $35,000.
<br /> The Parks, Recreation and Community Services Depar�ment along with the Agency
<br /> conducted an on-line survey of circus attendees in 4ctober 2008. The survey revealed
<br /> #hat ou# of the 128 responden#s, 96 percen# reques#ed that the Zoppe Circus return to
<br /> Redwood City. Gi�en the cammunity's support for Zoppe, s#aff proposes to increase
<br /> the number of performances from eight in 2008 to 17 in 2�09. The $25,0�0 increase in
<br /> the Zoppe Agreement will accommodafe the additional performances.
<br /> Zoppe wi(I arrive on October 12#h to set up and will begin ciean up/tear down
<br /> immediately after the last perFormance. The ticket prices will be the same as last year;
<br /> matinee tickets will be $10 for chifdren and $15 for adul#s while #he evening tickets will
<br /> be $15 for children and $2Q for adults. The Agency will seek partnerships wi#h Iocal
<br /> non-profrts including the Downtown Business Group and the Kiwanis Club to sell tickets
<br /> as a fundraiser for their respective organizations. The non-profits may purchase a
<br /> portion of tickets from #he Agency at half price and sell #he tickets at#ull price.
<br /> The Agency wilf contribute an additional $25,OQ0 for direct costs associated wi#h Zoppe
<br /> Circus, specifcally for marketing and praducfion expenses including, bu# not limited to
<br /> advertising, equipment rental, tent installafion and removal and animal supplies (hay, �
<br /> straw and ki[n-dried wood shavings). Currently, the Parks, Recreation and Community
