Local <br /> agencies are no longer required to carry�ut these direc#ives, nor will they be reimbursed if they <br /> choose to continue#o imp�ement these programs.The vast majority of the newly suspended <br /> mandates affect coun#y responsibilities, but there are a few that are of interest to cities. <br /> The most significant new suspension for cities rela#es to housing and caring for s#ray dogs and <br /> cats(commonly referred to as the"Animal Adoption"mandate}. The �udget eiiminates#he <br /> requirement thafi local agencies house and care far stray dogs and cats beyond an initial 72-hour <br /> holding period. The budget also suspends the requiremen#s tha#Ivcal agencies veri#y the <br /> temperament of feral cats, pos#Ios#and found fis#s related to stray animals, maintain r�on-medicaf <br /> records for impounded animals, and provide impvunded animals with"r�ecessary and prompt <br /> ve#ennary care."Additionally,the budget eliminates reimbursements for agencies that are open <br /> either one weekday evening or one weekend day#o facili#ate anima! adoption. <br /> A few o#her suspended mandates that may be of interest#o big ci#ies relate to DNA sample- <br /> storage and collection, as well as the stvlen-vehicie-notificafion manda#e,which genera[!y <br /> requires"originaf reporting"law enforcement agencies#o notify reporting parties when a staten <br /> vehicle has been recovered by another agency. <br /> 1ltihether it makes s�nse to forego these mandates must be determined vn a city-by-city basis. <br /> Some of these programs may ha�e become entrenched in local procedur�and elirnina#'sng them <br /> may be more of a hassle than carrying on with the s#atus quo. Some agencies may decide these <br /> programs are worth continuing based on their unique vaiue to the community. However,#he cos# <br /> of carrying out these pragrams may be significant in same localities.
