08/10/2009
SALTWORKS 50 /50 BALANCED PLAN
Executive Summary
Overview of Application Submittal &
Statement of Justi fication
I, Introduction
DMB Redwood City Saltworks (" Saltworks" or "Saltworks Team ") is pleased to present
to the elected officials, residents, and the staff of the City of Redwood City ("City") the
culmination of over three years of community engagement, outreach, and dialog: the
Saltworks 50150 Balanced Plan. This Overview is a summary of the 50/50 Balanced
Plan as presented in the filings with the City.. With equal commitments to the
establishment of community open space /ecological restoration and the creation of a
model transit-oriented, sustainable community, the 50/50 Balanced Plan reflects, we
believe, the priorities and vision of Redwood City as articulated by the overwhelming
majority of the more than 10,000 participants in the Saltworks outreach process.
The 50/50 Balanced Plan is for the future of the 1,436 -acre property within the City
north of U.S. 101 and east of Seaport Boulevard and the Port of Redwood City,
currently operating -- as much of it has for over 100 years -- as an active industrial salt
harvesting facility for Cargill Salt (" Saltworks Site" or "Site see attached Site
Overview).
Under the 50/50 Balanced Plan, at least half of the Saltworks Site would be utilized for
community open space and tidal marsh restoration, and the remaining half would
become an innovative, sustainable transit oriented community leveraging existing
proximity to multi -modal transit opportunities with a walkable, mixed -use design at a
truly unprecedented scale.
II. Opportunity and Imperative
The 50/50 Balanced Plan presents an extraordinary opportunity for the citizens of
Redwood City. In no other geographic region, perhaps, are there such strong
convictions for both environmental conservation and progressive, sustainable urban
living. Both are realized in a harmonized and integrated manner under the 50/50
Balanced Plan. With equal commitments to community open space /ecological
restoration and innovative, sustainable community design, this active industrial facility
one.day can be recognized as the premiere model community in the region and beyond.
14958
MUFF # 601
