From: Clara Jaeckel
To: GRP -City Council
Subject: public comment for 3/8/2021 city council meeting - items 7A, 8A, and item not on the agenda
Date: Monday, March 8, 2021 1:14:44 AM
CAUTION: This email originated from outside your organization. Exercise caution when
opening attachments or clicking links, especially from unknown senders.
I would like to comment on the following items for the 3/8/2021 city council meeting:
7A - I am eager to see the work that the Sub -Committee on Equity and Social Justice will do.
Regarding the proposed Police Advisory Committee, I appreciate the intent to provide greater
review on the actions of the police department. However, given that the committee's work plan
will be set in conjunction with the chief of police, and the committee will have no disciplinary
authority to enforce its directives, it's difficult to see how it will lead to meaningful change. I
urge you to continue looking for ways to provide the independent oversight that the
community called for in the listening sessions last year.
8A - I am very pleased to see our city taking up the issue of hazard pay for grocery workers
and urge you to proceed with the development of the ordinance. Thank you for treating this as
a matter of urgency.
Item not on the agenda - I would like to repeat my call for a study session on the public safety
budget, not solely to provide information on existing budget plans, but to receive community
input to shape those plans. Please hold this session early enough in the cycle that the input
gathered can meaningfully guide the development of the budget. After the community's calls
for police budget reform last year were deferred to the next fiscal cycle, I urge you not to
delay any further, but make this a priority now.
Thank you,
Clara Jaeckel
