Exercise caution when
opening attachments or clicking links, especially from unknown senders.
Redwood City Council -
I am writing to you to voice my strong support for the Planning Commission and City staff
recommendation to limit the height of 16 feet/one-story.
I live in the Mount Carmel neighborhood and I am concerned that the character of our
neighborhood is quickly being damaged by incongruously tall ADU's which are too close to
neighbors lot lines.
I am all for affordable housing and support the construction of ADUs. However I think it can
be done in a thoughtful way that preserves the character of our neighborhoods and respects
neighbors' privacy. Our neighbor at 226 Hudson was going to build a two story ADU that
would have completely destroyed any sense of privacy in our backyard. During the planning
process we felt extremely stressed and were heartbroken that we would lose our sense of
privacy. We feel very lucky that she opted to build a one story unit. While there are some
adjustments that come with the higher density next door which can be frustrating at times, they
are manageable because for the most part our privacy and sunlight in our backyard were
preserved.
I am frustrated that many people say we have to have no limits on ADUs because that will hurt
the push for affordable housing. Many of these ADUs are not contributing to affordable
housing, as homeowners are renting them out for exorbitant amounts of money or using them
for their own use. Some people are even building them, and then selling
their properties immediately and leaving their neighbors to deal with the consequences. 208
Lowell is a prime example of this, I would encourage you to view this in person during the
day.
The 16 ft limit for detached ADU's will preserve the character of our neighborhoods and
promote positive neighborly relations while still allowing for plenty of opportunity to build
ADU's to improve the housing stock in redwood city.
This is an important issue for the quality of life for residents of redwood city. We can improve
housing stock, while doing it in a respectful manner. I strongly urge you to approve the
recommended 16 foot limit.
Best,
W
ie Ha man
imm
