Attachment 2

8A
Page 24

City of Redwood City
FY 2009-2010 Budget Amendments - September 2009
Detail of Recommended Pro~rammatic Chan2es

GENERAL FUND

curtail some of his community presentations and counseling that are currently in large demand from
the public and the parents with youth that have run afoul of the law.

The School Resource Officer (SRO) is a sworn police officer who provides on-site support to Sequoia
High School to address truancy and crime that occurs on campus. The SRO also spends time mentoring
at-risk youth. This officer has a flexible schedule to provide a police presence at after hour school
activities and special events. The school relies heavily on the SRO and without this officer present will
likely summon the on-duty beat officer repeatedly during the officer's work week. Juvenile matters
often take a considerable amount of time to attend to and the beat officer will therefore spend an
inordinate amount of time on campus diminishing the time spent policing the beat he/she is assigned
to.

14
