MidPen Housing, in partnership with the Mental Health Association of
San Mateo County, was selected to manage and provide supportive services for the senior residents of
this affordable housing community. MidPen Housing has an exemplary record of accomplishments as a
developer and reliable owner/operator of 34 high-quality affordable communities in the County of San
Mateo, including several in Redwood City.
Located in our City's Redwood Shores neighborhood, this project provides a unique opportunity to
rapidly and permanently house extremely -low income seniors who are formerly homeless, at risk of
homelessness, and/or are medically frail. The last formal homeless count, completed on January 30,
2019, reported 901 unsheltered individuals in San Mateo County, with 25 percent of this population
being in Redwood City. The COVID-19 pandemic has undoubtedly put more individuals, including
seniors, at risk of homelessness. It is because of this urgent need for housing that San Mateo County
used Project Homekey funds to purchase two hotel properties within our City limits, one of which is
TownePlace Suites.
Redwood City strives to be a leader in producing and preserving affordable housing for all and continues
to make housing its top strategic priority. The success of the TownePlace Suites project not only creates
permanent housing for those disproportionately impacted by the pandemic, but is essential to
addressing the profound need for more housing. It will also assist the City in reaching our very -low
income Regional Housing Needs Allocation (RHNA) goals for the 2015 to 2023 Housing Element cycle.
As the County and MidPen Housing continue working to demonstrate a long-term plan to feasibly
operate TownePlace Suites for the next 10 years (the length of the contract between the County and
MidPen Housing), we are calling your attention to MidPen Housing's Federal funding request to seek
assistance for a portion of TownPlace Suites' Year 1 operation costs. Funding a portion of Year 1
operations is an urgent need in our community and funding support would help demonstrate long-term
project solvency.
City of Redwood City 1017 Middlefield Road, Redwood City, CA. 94063 Tel: 650-780-7220 www.redwoodcitV.org 153
