8.B. - Page 1 of 8 <br />/<�ik <br />Redwood <br />CitylCallifornia <br />Faunded 1867 <br />Ago/ <br />DATE: April 26, 2021 <br />SUBJECT <br />STAFF REPORT <br />To the Honorable Mayor and City Council <br />From the City Manager <br />City Council consideration and selection of the process to be used for redistricting of City Council election <br />districts as a result of the 2020 US Census <br />RECOMMENDATION <br />The City Council Governance Sub -Committee recommends the City Council adopt a resolution establishing <br />an Advisory Redistricting Committee to conduct public engagement and to advise the City Council on the <br />adoption of a new City Council district election map as a result of the 2020 US Census. <br />STRATEGIC PLAN GUIDING PRINCIPLE <br />Excellence in Government Operations <br />BACKGROUND <br />In May 2019, the City of Redwood City transitioned from an at -large election system to a district -based <br />election system for the election of City Council members. The City Council adopted a final District Elections <br />map that was comprised of seven districts. The first City Council election under the new District elections <br />map was held on November 3, 2020, and four Council District seats were on the ballot. In compliance with <br />federal and state law, the City must now undergo a redistricting process based on new 2020 US Census <br />demographic data. <br />On March 8, 2021, the City Council approved an agreement with Redistricting Partners to guide and <br />support the City through the City Council redistricting process.
