Age <br />The Bay Area’s population is disproportionately <br />aged 25 to 54 years relative to California as a whole. <br />Redwood City’s population is also concentrated <br />in these age cohorts, totaling approximately <br />50% of the total population. Children 9 years and <br />younger make up a slightly greater proportion of <br />Redwood City residents relative to the Bay Area and <br />California. <br />On the other hand, residents 10 to 24 years account <br />for 17% of the City’s population, which is a smaller <br />proportion relative to Bay Area and California <br />residents more broadly. Redwood City residents <br />55 years and older likewise account for a smaller <br />proportion relative to Bay Area and California <br />residents. <br />Race and Ethnicity <br />Between 2010 and 2016, the proportions of <br />Redwood City’s Hispanic, Latino and Asian <br />populations increased while the proportions of <br />all other racial and ethnic groups decreased. In <br />2010, the majority of the population identifi ed <br />as non-Hispanic white (44%), Hispanic or Latino <br />(39%), or Asian (11%). In 2016, these racial and <br />ethnic groups remained the largest proportionally, <br />with 43% of residents identifying as non-Hispanic <br />white, 39% identifying as Hispanic or Latino, and <br />13% identifying as Asian. The remaining residents <br />identifi ed as two or more races (3%), black/ <br />African American (2%), Native Hawaiian or Other <br />Pacifi c Islander (1%), some other race (0.2%), and <br />American Indian and Alaska Native (0.1%). <br />Redwood City’s racial and ethnic demographics diff er <br />from those of San Mateo County as a whole. In 2016, <br />39% of Redwood City residents identifi ed as Hispanic <br />or Latino, while 25% of San Mateo residents did so. <br />On the other hand, Redwood City has proportionally <br />smaller non-Hispanic white and Asian populations. <br />In 2016, 43% of Redwood City residents identifi ed <br />as white, compared to 54% of San Mateo County <br />residents. Thirteen percent (13%) of City residents <br />identifi ed as Asian, compared to 27% of San Mateo <br />County residents who identifi ed as Asian. <br />The City’s diversity, as well as its shifting <br />demographics, indicate a need for culturally relevant <br />and responsive services that help current residents <br />feel welcome and respond to their interests. <br />Income and Educational Attainment <br />Redwood City’s Median Household Income (MHI) <br />increased from $66,700 to $76,500 (14%) between <br />2000 and 2010. The City’s MHI continued to increase <br />from 2010 to 2016, increasing to $90,500. Between <br />2000 and 2010, Redwood City experienced a smaller <br />increase in MHI relative to San Mateo County. <br />However, between 2010 and 2016, Redwood City <br />experienced a larger increase in MHI relative to San <br />Mateo County. <br />Redwood City’s poverty rate rose from 6% in 2000 <br />to 9% in 2016, despite median household earnings <br />increasing 36% during the same period.
