Official Argument in Favor of Measure _ (Combined amendments w/out Mayoral Term Change) <br />283 Words <br />Vote Yes on _ to make common-sense updates to Redwood City's City Charter to comply with State law <br />and avoid potentially costly lawsuits. <br />Redwood City's Charter – which is essentially the city's constitution — was first adopted in 1929 and has 1 cj <br />been amended 17 times with approval from Redwood City voters. City Charter amendments are ?� <br />common -place fixes to account for changes in State or Federal law, technological advances, or evolving <br />standards of good govemance. (' <br />Measure_ represents one of these simple, procedural fixes. Voting Yes will: <br />Avoid costly litigation by ensuring Redwood City complies with the California Voting Rights Act <br />la <br />Help ensure Redwood City's elections are fair and accurate <br />Promote participation in local government and make Redwood City more efficient <br />Specifically, Measure_ will enact three amendments to align the City Charter with current practice in <br />Redwood City govemment, ensure compliance with State law, or make local govemment more efficient. <br />To align with current Redwood City practice aiming to maximize voter participation in local elections, <br />officially move the date of regularly scheduled City Council elections to coincide with statewide general <br />elections on the first Tuesday following the first Monday in November of even numbered years <br />To ensure time for all ballots to be counted fairly and accurately, clarify the date by which City elections <br />` <br />must be certified and City Councilmembers sworn in <br />Update the Charter to reflect Redwood City's current practice of electing Councilmembers by <br />117 <br />geographic districts in which they must reside rather than by a citywide at -large vote <br />S� <br />Each amendment has been carefully studied, discussed in multiple open public hearings and are <br />r <br />unanimously supported by Redwood City's Mayor and City Council. <br />Measure_ is democracy in action.
