Chamber Letter to Council RE: Ad-Hoc Committee Report on Business License Tax
conditions which exist today and are anticipated for the foreseeable future . If you go too far,
you may get a short term increase in revenue that becomes a worsening deficit, and/or run
the risk of organized opposition resulting in voters rejecting the ballot measure which gets
you nothing.

We ask that you reject any proposal that has exorbitant rates and no cap or an unreasonable
cop on a business’ tax liability which could cause the same reduction in workforce by
businesses forced to make difficult decisions about where and how they operate. High per -
employee rates and no cap on tax liability is bad for private sector workers. And balancing
your budget shortfall of any size with workforce reductions on the represented women and
men who make up most of Redwood City’s employees is also unacceptable and bad for city
workers.

As I outlined in my letter to you last week, the Chamber has always been a willing partner
with the City and remains committed to ensuring our partnership transcends this difficult
issue. We want to see Council reach a taxing rate that we can support, as we have with prior
tax measures. We strongly encourage you to continue to listen to the city’s businesses and
truly understand the impact unreasonable rates and lac k of a cap will have on them.

Should you have any questions or like to discuss this matter further, I would welcome the
opportunity for a conversation.

Sincerely,

Amy N.
