Page 1

SENT BY EMAIL

July 21, 2024

Mayor Jeff Gee
Vice Mayor Lissette Espinoza-Garnica
Members of the City Council
City of Redwood City
1017 Middlefield Road
Redwood City, CA 94063

Subject: Redwood City Business License Tax

Dear Mayor Gee, Vice Mayor Espinoza-Garnica, and Members of the City Council:
Granite Rock has followed closely the City’s review of its business license tax. We have actively
participated in the process along with other members of Seaport Industrial Association (SIA).
Granite Rock appreciates your engagement of the business community, including a productive
session focused on industrial businesses in the Redwood City port area. Granite Rock’s Redwood
City operations is the largest industrial rail user on the Peninsula, manufacturing and recycling
construction materials to support the maintenance and development of our region.

Granite Rock understands the importance of addressing the City’s structural budget deficit. Our
company is heavily invested in Redwood City having a presence of approximately 60 years, and
we intend to remain so for the long term. We value the unique and strategic opportunity that our
location provides our business, which in turn contributes to the strength of the local economy.
City services are also vital to a healthy economy and community, and we want to continue to be
a partner in helping you confront the budget challenge.

As a member and as an industry, we support the comments of Seaport Industrial Association on
this issue and want to reinforce the following points:

• Granite Rock feels the proposed rates for retail businesses in the port area are
reasonable. Thank you for listening and responding to our input.
• Granite Rock is willing to pay our fair share of an updated business license tax to support
essential services. We appreciate that the current proposal recognizes our company’s
contribution from other tax sources.
