JOHANNA STREET, ARCHITECT Page 9
The essential rectangular form and character defining features of the front façade are to
be retained in the proposed project. If the new addition were to be removed in the future,
the essential rectangular form and integrity of the historic building would likely be
slightly damaged in some locations where the addition meets the existing building. Minor
repair and restoration efforts would be needed to restore the building to its previous
configuration. The essence and integrity of the building would likely remain and as such
the proposed project complies with Standard 10.

Conclusions and Recommendations
The proposed project appears to meet the majority of the Redwood City Downtown
Precise Plan Standards and Guidelines and the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for
Rehabilitation.

The following are recommendations for greater compliance and compatibility:

Retain existing painted wording on the large metal sign with curved arrow and
coat with translucent grey so that the lettering reads through but it is clear that
Roy’s Cleaners is no longer in business.

Remove the new brick column at the north corner of the El Camino façade. Retain
the painted sign on the Harrison Avenue façade and coat with translucent grey so
that the lettering reads through but it is clear that Roy’s Cleaners is no longer in
business.

Mark all surviving historic features on the front facade (existing stucco-clad
concrete block exterior wall, the distinctive metal sign with curved arrow, the
brick veneer, wood louvered screen, storefront with glazed entry doors with
transom and fixed windows, brick planting boxes, and flat boxed awning) as
“existing to remain” on the construction documents.

Dimension and show that 75% of the existing exterior wall is to be retained.

Indicate on the drawings that the brick will not be sandblasted or treated with
impermeable coatings.

ATTY/RESO.0074/ PC APPROVING DOWNTOWN PLANNED COMMUNITY PERMIT FOR PROJECT AT 1100 EL CAMINO REAL
REV: 07-11-2023 JB
