Ingram
City Manager
City of Redwood City
1017 Middlefield Rd.
RedvlOod City, CA 94063

Dear P~)ter:

Thank you for speaking to me the other day about our San Mateo County
History Ivluseum. We propose that The Redwood City Redevelopment Agency
consider granting $7,500 to help us with the organization of our "Celebration
of the Peninsula's Diversity: Immigrants Day Festival." The cost of the day is
$34,050 (see enclosed budget). We have asked Safeway and the Redwood
City Redevelopment Agency to co-sponsor the event. Smaller donations from
local small businesses will also be solicited. The Redevelopment Agency will
be credited in an our promotional materials, including banners, fliers and ads.

As you know, among our recent improvements at the History ~luseum is the
installation of a permanent exhibit gallery dedicated to the immigrant
experience on the Peninsula. This $ 1 million portion of the museum is
engaging, educational, and highly interactive. Tills subject is of great interest
to the people of San Mateo County and their visitors. fv10st people realize that
an estimated 30% of the people of the County today have been born in another
country. Far fewer realize that back in 1880, 30% of the people of the County
were born in another country. Thus the immigrant experience is both topical
and historical.

To complement the display, four years ago the :rv1useUln organized an
Hlmmigrant's Day." The committees from the various ethnic communities that
helped us create the gallery assigned representatives to assist us,

Last year, the Basque community plus seven countries were represented -
Ireland, China, Portugal, Italy, Japan, Mexico, and the Philippines, We
scheduled music and folk dancing on Courthouse Square, featuring
performances of all eight groups. In the rotunda we offered craft activities for
children reminiscent of the ethnic groups. Upstairs we had a "taste of the
eight" with representative foods.

Board of Directors

Keith Bautista
Chairman 2009.2010

Karen S.
