REPORT

6.1C
age 1

To the Honorable Mayor and City Council
From the Cit Mana er

November 23, 2009

SUBJECT
Disposal of Surplus Property

RECOMMENDATION
Approve by motion and declare the vehicles and equipment on the attached list surplus,
and authorize staff to sell the items per City procedure.

BACKGROUND
The Public Works Services Department, in conjunction with the Finance Department,
acts as the centralized collection and storage point for City property that has reached its
useful life cycle as measured by department efficiency and effectiveness standards
and/or is considered surplus from various City departments.

Government Code Section 37351 and Section 3-1/2 of the Charter of the City of
Redwood City as amended, permits the sale of any City personal property having an
appraised value of five thousand dollars or less without public notice or public bid for
any reasonable amount, irrespective of its appraised value. It also allows the City to
dispose of surplus property no longer required or needed for present, prospective
municipal or public purpose without sale. Staff recommends that the vehicles and
equipment on the list be ready to dispose of before the beginning of summer, when the
most active auction activities occur.

AL TERNA TIVES
Continue storing and collecting the City's surplus property may not be financially
beneficial for the City since surplus properties will have less re-sale value as they age in
the surplus lot.

FISCAL IMPACT
The revenue from the sale of this surplus property will be returned to the Equipment
Replacement Fund.
~L.~
~~~
~
~8~)
arry Barw z
Public Works Services Director
Terence Kyaw
Fleet Manager
Peter Ingram
City Manager
ATTACHMENTS
Surplus Property (Exhibit "AU)
RELATED DOCUMENTS IN CITY CLERK'S OFFICE
None
