A-1 <br />APPENDIX A <br />GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE CITY OF REDWOOD CITY <br />AND SAN MATEO COUNTY <br />The following information concerning the City of Redwood City (the “City”) and San Mateo <br />County (the “County”) are included only for the purpose of supplying general information <br />regarding the community. The Bonds are not a debt of the City, the County, the State of California <br />(the “State”) or any of its political subdivisions, and neither the City, the County, the State nor any <br />of its political subdivisions is liable therefor. <br /> <br />General <br />The City. The City is located in the San Francisco Bay Area 25 miles south of San <br />Francisco. It is the oldest bayside city in the County, incorporated in 1867, and has been the <br />County Seat since 1856. The City combines residential, industrial, and commercial elements in <br />a largely urban environment. Its waterfront provides a yacht harbor and the only deep-water port <br />in the South Bay. A wide variety of housing types are available. Services and trade, the County’s <br />two largest industry divisions, are expected to provide close to two-thirds of anticipated growth in <br />the next two years. <br />The County. The County is located on the California coast approximately 15 miles south <br />of the City of San Francisco. The County is a major employment base, situated approximately 30 <br />miles north of Silicon Valley via Interstate 280 or U.S. Highway 101. The County has an <br />approximate total area of 741 square miles, of which 448 square miles is land and 293 square <br />miles is water. It is the third-smallest county in California by land area. <br />The County was formed in 1856 after San Francisco County, one of the state's 18 original <br />counties since California's statehood in 1850, was split apart. Until 1856, San Francisco's city <br />limits extended west to Divisadero Street and Castro Street, and south to 20th Street. In response <br />to the lawlessness and vigilantism that escalated rapidly between 1855 and 1856, the California <br />government decided to divide the County. A straight line was then drawn across the tip of the <br />San Francisco Peninsula just north of San Bruno Mountain; everything south of the line became <br />the new San Mateo County. <br />8.A. - Page 80 of 255 <br />708
