From:Chris Robell
To:publiccomment
Subject:Public Comment Agenda Item #5 (items not on agenda)
Date:Monday, October 28, 2024 3:09:46 PM
[You don't often get email from chris_robell@yahoo.com. Learn why this is important at
https://aka.ms/LearnAboutSenderIdentification ]
Dear City Council,
I would like you to consider adopting a resolution to formally opposed Proposition 5, as other city councils (e.g.,
Gilroy) have done.
Proposition 5, as you know, makes it easier for the government to raise taxes. It lowers the approval threshold from
2/3rds to 55% for general obligation bonds which are an expensive form of debt. It will make everyone’s property
taxes more expensive. There no NO exemptions for seniors on fixed income or exceptions for those in need.
Everyone pays more.
Business owners will pay more taxes causing them to increase the price of products and services as well.
I hope we can all agree taxes are sufficiently high in our region as is the cost of housing.
If taxes genuinely need to be raised, it should be the same 2/3rds approval threshold since the formation of the
California Constitution in 1879.
Somehow the government is doing a fine job making sure we pay enough. Let’s not make it any easier.
Chris Robell
