Learn why this is important <br />Mayor Gee and Councilmembers: <br />I am delighted that sea level rise is being studied more intensively and will, I hope, be acted on soon. <br />As an active member of Sequoia Audubon Society of San Mateo county, I request that you consider <br />Nature and Nature-Based Solutions (NBBS) in all your proposals and plans to fortify Redwood City <br />against sea level rise and accompanying high tides and storm surges. <br />The Bay Conservation and Development Commission’s draft Regional Shoreline Adaptation Plan of <br />September 2024 includes NBBS. It will be finalized in December 2024. I hope you are reviewing and <br />working with BCDC’s plan as Redwood City develops its own plans. <br />Our city is fortunate to have some existing natural buffers, such as Bair Island, to absorb some of the <br />brunt. I would like to see you take the opportunity to use the Cargill Salt Ponds in a similar way, <br />restored to salt marsh or at least with a significant horizontal levee with natural vegetation. This <br />would likely be less expensive in the long run than defending buildings on the current salt pond site. <br />On a smaller scale, I hope that the proposed Redwood Creek/Bradford Street trail will be <br />incorporated in sea level rise plans for this section, along with appropriate concerns for the effect of <br />artificial lighting at night on birds and wildlife there. <br />Thank you. <br />Chris MacIntosh <br />North Fair Oaks, 94063 <br />chrismac@alumni.upenn.edu
