Advancing Equity in Redwood City
Redwood City describes equity as the goal of creating conditions that allow each community
member to thrive and prosper. This aligns closely with the City’s vision of being “a community
where people of all backgrounds and income levels can thrive.”
Equity may also be described as a strategy for
fairness, similar to equality. Equality
achieves fairness by ensuring everyone
has the same resources. Recognizing the
different circumstances different
individuals face, equity achieves
fairness by ensuring we each have
the resources we need to thrive --
even when that’s different from
what our neighbor needs.
IDEAL Update - February 2025 | Page 1
Our Commitment
In 2016, Redwood City joins
Welcoming America, with Council
adopting a resolution proclaiming RWC
a welcoming place February 14, 2017.
City Council proclaims support
for “honoring and protecting
every individual regardless of
race, creed, color, gender,
religion, ethnicity, nationality,
orientation, or identity” for
United Against Hate Week 2019.
On January 13, 2020, Council adopts a Strategic Plan with the current mission
statement, “Building a welcoming Redwood City through collaboration, responsiveness
and excellence.”
On August 10, 2020, Council adopts Resolution
15877 declaring Black Lives Matter and affirming
Council members “are dedicated to diversity,
inclusion, and equal justice as core parts of who
we are and what we stand for, and we recognize
that we can always do better.”
On October 12, 2020, Council amends the
Strategic Plan to include a foundational guiding
principle: “Redwood City will put equity first,
urging a collective restart so that policies serve
the entire community.”
5.A. - Page 71 of 75
73
