From:Karvin Dassanayake
To:publiccomment
Subject:Public comment: Agenda Item 4
Date:Friday, February 7, 2025 6:53:20 PM
You don't often get email from karvin9@gmail.com. Learn why this is important
Dear City Council members,
The last few years have been very exciting in Redwood City as someone who rides a bike to
commute and do errands, with new bike and pedestrian safety projects progressing throughout
the city. This - among many other things - makes me proud to be a Redwood City resident.
As cycling and active transportation continues to get more popular in Redwood City, I do hope
the Council prioritizes devoting city resources and other funding to improving and expanding
on these facilities. The ability to cycle safely and with confidence shouldn’t be restricted to
just athletes on racing road bikes but also families with young kids on balance bikes and
seniors on electric assist bikes.
Redwood City still remains a dangerous place to ride with many bike-car collisions happening
every year, with some fatal - like in August, near Sequoia High School. With recent events in
the region, like in San Carlos, it’s clear that there is a large, vocal and ever growing
community that cares about these issues - and a growing amount of press coverage for it. With
transportation a city priority, I do hope the City Council prioritizes active transportation within
that. Improved, safe, protected bicycle infrastructure has been proven to increase local
business revenues and lead to a healthier and happier community. And with climate change
being an ever present threat to the city and its residents, this is just one more way to help
reduce transportation related emissions and improve the quality of life for those in Redwood
City.
It’s very easy to pay lip service to supporting bike facilities but I, again, strongly encourage
council members to prioritize acquiring funding and dedicating city resources for it.
Looking forward to a more bike friendly Redwood City,
District 2 Resident,
Karvin Dassanayake
