Learn why this is important
This letter is in opposition to the plan, initial and revised, for a bio-tech
campus on the site of a closed waste dump in Redwood Shores already
developed and housing many businesses. Despite the downsizing of the
plan, it does not, and cannot, address the following:
1. The risk of further contamination from the aging dump. A cafe patio
collapsed several years ago due to the buildup of methane gas under it.
There is no way to guarantee this, or worse, won't happen again.
2. Adding more people and traffic threatens the ecosystem of Belmont
Slough and its wildlife. We are learning that the vitality of the Bay is more
important than we thought 40 years ago when this area was developed,
especially as we consider a changing climate.
3. The size of this planned development negatively impacts the nearby
housing dramatically increasing traffic and air pollution.
4. Assurances by the developer that bio-tech risks will be "mitigated"
should be enough to convince City planners and Council to deny the
development. There are other, safer, more appropriate sites for this type
of development.
Richard and Ramona Raybin
Redwood Shores
