communication, distributing surveys focused on park upgrades, not traffic. Even
they admitted they don’t have authority over traffic decisions. So why are they
guiding a project that’s supposed to be about traffic safety?
This closure has made traffic worse in the neighborhood. How are residents
supposed to leave the neighborhood safely when this closure makes all exit points
feel dangerous? Brewster still has rampant speeding. The blind hill on Brewster
makes all turns from Outer Circle unsafe. The left turn into Outer Circle off
Brewster requires cars to enter the oncoming traffic lane due to the shape of the
street. The new bump-outs near Nevada worsen visibility - especially when cars
are parked near the intersection. Outer Circle and Nevada, which once had sparse
traffic, now have higher traffic volumes. Residents are forced to make unsafe U-
turns around the park just to leave the neighborhood. Only one crosswalk is
planned - and none of them decrease the safety issues of increased park use.
There are no crosswalks to the park.
There’s also been no clear input from emergency services. Can fire trucks safely
access Southgate and Inner Circle with the current road setup? Are response times
longer with the road closures? We don’t know.
Parking is already tight, and the narrow streets can’t support increased traffic and
cars parked on both sides. Crosswalks are missing (especially for park access),
even though more people will now be drawn to the park. These changes are in
conflict—adding use without planning for safety.
The city is not following its own traffic calming procedures. Traffic studies
haven’t been shared- even when requested. Communications have been
confusing, and residents have been left in the dark. The community as whole
deserves transparency and real engagement – not just the people who made the
initial complaint or people who want to turn green space into a “destination park.”
I urge you to pause this pilot. Separate the traffic safety conversation from park
improvements. Fix the real issue—unsafe streets—before talking about fencing,
playgrounds and dog parks. This project makes me feel less safe in my own
neighborhood, both behind the wheel and on foot.
I also urge decision makers to spend time driving the area and recognizing the
issues created by the street closure and new unsafe turns. These aren’t problems
“counter bump” installations are going to solve.
Thank you.
