Learn why this is important
Dear Council Members and Fellow Residents:
Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to express our concerns. We are the property owners at
1050 Charter Street, the next-door neighbor to Summit Charter High School. We are currently very
concerned about the homeless problem on the cul-de-sac and the impact not only to our commercial
tenants, but also worried about the safety issues facing our students, including: lack of sidewalk access,
public urination, drug usage and vandalism. God forbid, in the instance of a natural disaster or active
shooter, evacuation routes be impeded by debris from homeless encampments. (Please see attached
photos as example).
Making repeated reports on the myRWC app does not create any type of long-term solution to this
ongoing problem.
As a Sequoia Union High School parent, I have attempted to contact the district myself and make a
formal report, but this has also seemed to produce no meaningful results.
I have also attempted to work with 24-Hour fitness located directly across the street from us on Charter,
with little or no interest from them. Some of the homeless living in vehicles in front of our building
maintain memberships at 24-hour fitness in order to utilize the restroom and shower. This particular
business is contributing to the ongoing hazard to the community.
Over the past 24 months I have personally witnessed the following activities in front of our building:
Cooking on the sidewalk with an open flame
Dismantling of bicycles, presumably stolen
Public urination
Dumping
Drug Usage
Obstruction to the right of way
Illegal break-in and use of our building's water access
We are law-abiding citizens, who pay our business license fees and taxes. We have leased the building
to tenants who are good, hard-working people, who just want to do their jobs in peace and sanitary
conditions.
After trying to follow the instructions we have been provided by using the myRWC app and contacting
officer Leila Velez when all else fails, (velez@redwoodcity.org) we still continue to face the same daily
challenges.
We are begging the council to please seriously consider adopting the ordinance in front of you today.
You may call me anytime at (650) 533-7916 or simply reply to this email.
Until then, thank you again,
Regina Riviello
