Hydraulic Model Development and Calibration
City of Redwood City (0011239.02)2-12 Woodard & Curran, Inc.
Sanitary Sewer Capacity Master Plan November 2023
The flow factors presented in Error! Reference source not found. were used to calculate BWF from future
developments. As discussed in the Design Flow and Hydraulic Criteria TM in Appendix B, these flow factors are based
on the sewage generation factors specified in the City’s Design Criteria (see Attachment D to the Design Flow and
Hydraulic Criteria TM).
Table 2-2:Sewage Generation Unit Flow Factors Based on City Standards
User Type Unit Flow Factor
Residential
Single Family1 204 gpd/DU
Multi-Family2 132 gpd/DU
Non-Residential3
Office/Commercial 0.12 gpd/sq. ft.
Research & Development (R&D)0.20 gpd/sq. ft.
Hotels 185 gpd/room
Motels 162 gpd/room
Restaurants 28.5 gpd/seat
Hospitals 0.26 gpd/sq. ft.
Nursing Homes/Daycare 71 gpd/person
Medical Offices 0.17 gpd/sq. ft.
Schools 33 gpd/person
1.Based on 60 gpd/person and 2.2 persons per DU.
2.Based on 60 gpd/person and 3.4 persons per DU.
3.Based on 0.95 times water demand factors.
2.3.2.3 BWF Diurnal Profiles
BWF varies throughout the day in a typical way, generally peaking early in the morning in upstream sewers, and later
and less sharply in larger downstream sewers. BWF profiles also vary based on day of the week, with distinct weekday
and weekend patterns. This is particularly true of industrial or office park areas, where flows on weekend days may
drop significantly.
For Redwood City, diurnal profiles were developed for residential and commercial/industrial (non-residential) wastewater
flow, for both weekend and weekday conditions. The profiles were then applied separately to the subcatchment
residential and non-residential BWF in the model. During calibration, alternate residential and non-residential patterns
were also developed to better match observed diurnal patterns for Redwood Shores and Seaport/Pacific Shores areas.
The residential and non-residential profiles used in the model are shown in Figure 2-9 and Figure 2-10, respectively.
ATTY/RESO.0077/CC RESO SEWER SYSTEM MANAGEMENT PLAN - EXHIBIT A
REV: 07-14-25 LF
