Enforcement is a key strategy, however, it has been difficult to maintain full <br />staffing at the Police Department in spite of active recruitment efforts. Due to an increase in traffic safety <br />concerns, the Police Department’s motor unit is now fully staffed with four officers and a sergeant <br />focused on traffic safety initiatives. <br />Next Steps <br />Staff will continue the following efforts to implement Vision Zero: <br />Coordinate with outside agencies to implement Vision Zero infrastructure projects and programs <br />and supplement them with educational and enforcement activities. <br />Seek grant funding for more Vision Zero and traffic safety infrastructure and non-infrastructure <br />projects. <br />Provide an update on the City’s Vision Zero initiatives in FY 2026-27. <br />City Council Questions: <br />During the study session, staff will seek feedback on the Vision Zero activities, including these questions: <br />Does the City Council have questions about the factors associated with collisions in Redwood City? <br />Does the City Council have input on current infrastructure projects to improve safety? <br />Does the City Council have input on proposed education efforts to improve safety? <br />Does the City Council have input on proposed enforcement efforts to improve safety? <br />EQUITY IMPACT STATEMENT <br />Equity was considered during the development of the Redwood City Walk Bike Thrive Plan. Identified <br />projects, including Vision Zero projects, were evaluated and scored based on six criteria, one of which was <br />equity. During development of the plan, specific outreach was done to equity priority areas and all <br />outreach materials were available in both English and Spanish. Eight out of ten Vision Zero priority <br />locations (corridors and intersections) are within equity priority areas; therefore, most projects benefit <br />these communities. <br />Equity is also considered during planning, design, and community outreach for each traffic safety project <br />and program by considering needs of special community groups such as seniors and school students. <br />FISCAL IMPACT <br />There is no new fiscal impact associated with receiving this staff report. Multiple grants continue to fund <br />Vision Zero activities and projects. The Police Department also receives an annual STEP grant to fund <br />traffic-safety activities including enforcement and community education. Additionally, the FY 2025-26 <br />budget includes over $6 million for traffic safety capital projects. <br />11.A. - Page 13 of 15 <br />396
