Page 1 of 2 <br />City of Redwood City 1017 Middlefield Road, Redwood City, CA. 94063 Tel: 650-780-7000 www.redwoodcity.org <br />STAFF REPORT <br />To the Honorable Mayor and City Council <br />From the City Manager <br />DATE: September 29, 2025 <br />SUBJECT <br />Nationwide opioid settlement with Purdue Pharma L.P. and the Sackler family <br />RECOMMENDATION <br />By motion, approve and authorize the City Manager to participate in a nationwide opioid settlement with <br />Purdue Pharma L.P. and the Sackler family. <br />STRATEGIC PLAN GUIDING PRINCIPLE <br />Excellence in Government Operations <br />BACKGROUND <br />States and local political subdivisions throughout the nation have filed lawsuits against companies <br />involved in the manufacture, distribution and/or sale of prescription opioid drugs. The lawsuits generally <br />seek reimbursement for costs incurred to address the opioid epidemic. Redwood City has participated in <br />opioid settlements as they are negotiated. Further, in October 2022, City Council directed payment of <br />opioid settlement funds to the County of San Mateo to be used for opioid-abatement services to residents <br />of Redwood City and the rest of the County. <br />ANALYSIS <br />The City received notice that it is eligible to participate in nationwide opioid settlement with Purdue <br />Pharma L.P. and its owners, the Sackler family, regarding their involvement in the manufacturing and <br />distribution of opioids. The City Attorney’s Office recommends that the City participate in the settlement. <br />7.A. - Page 1 of 2 <br />9
