Kostura, Mills Act nomination for 731 Edgewood Road, Redwood City
side-gabled original house. A cantilevered second floor balcony has wooden railings and
balusters. All windows and sidelights are vinyl, while the first-floor door is wooden.
* A one-story addition immediately north of the one mentioned above. It has a shed roof and an
irregular footprint, including an oriel window. All windows have vinyl sash.
The garage
A new garage was built in 1974. Originally, automobile access to the property had been via a
driveway along the north side of the house that led to the former garage. When the north wing
was added to the house in 1968, the old garage became inaccessible to vehicles, and six years
later a new garage (described here) and a new driveway were built.
This building is located in the southeast corner of the lot and is accessed by the driveway that
runs along the south side of the lot. The owners state that this garage originally (in 1974) had
open sides, and that the sides were enclosed in 2015. It is one story in height and rectangular in
its footprint. The roof is pyramidal and is surmounted by an ornamental wooden cupola. Rafter
tails with carved ends are visible from below. The original roof was replaced in 1999 (according
to a building permit) and again in 2015 (according to the owners). The exterior of the building is
now clad in clapboard siding that matches that used in both the old and newer parts of the house.
Nearly all of the front is occupied by a four-part paneled wooden garage door with glazing in the
upper zone of each part. This glazing is divided by muntins into smaller lights.
History
The Wellesley Park subdivision
This house is located in a subdivision that was founded in 1888 as Wellesley Park.
