Kostura, Mills Act nomination for 731 Edgewood Road, Redwood City
The subject property, 731 Edgewood Road, falls within the original Wellesley Park subdivision,
not the newer Edgewood Park. With a construction date of 1936, it is not one of the oldest
houses in Wellesley Park, though it is older than many.
History of this house
Initial construction
This house, and a garage that was situated behind it, were built in 1936. The architect is
unknown because this was after the period when a construction and architectural journal
documented many new buildings in Redwood City, and it was prior to the requirement of
building permits.
Owners and residents
The owners and residents of this house from the time of construction to recent years are given
below. When their occupations are known, that information is given, too.
1936-1947. Glenn H. and Annabelle Ticer. Throughout this period he worked as a sales
representative for the Western Division of the National Broadcasting Company (NBC) at their
San Francisco office, initially in the Hunter-Dulin Building at 111 Sutter Street, and then in
NBC’s own new building at 420 Taylor Street.
1947 (February to June). Ridge L. Harlan.
1947-1949. George W. and Isabel A. Tanner. In 1950, after they had moved to another house
in Redwood City, he worked as the manager of a “cleaning plant.”
1949-1952. Ethel Dodge Frost.
1952-1959. Dalmar G. and Aura M. Berglund. During these years he was the western
manager of the A. Leschen and Sons Rope Company, at 520 Fourth Street in San Francisco.
This business manufactured Hercules Red Strand Wire Rope.
1959-1961. Jerome J. and Mary Lou Johnston. He was the manager of the Pacific Fullview
Company, possibly in San Carlos. The nature of this business is unknown.
1961-1962. Robert L. and Virginia Shaw. He was the sales manager of the Spinnerin Yarn
Company. Its place of business is unknown.
1962-1966. James C. and Patricia Pratt. During these years he was the “general agent”
(office manager) of the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company of Milwaukee at their
San Francisco office, in the Robert Dollar Building at 311 California Street.
7
9.A. - Page 76 of 247
334
