Kostura, Mills Act nomination for 731 Edgewood Road, Redwood City
occupies only the second story, the detailing in the posts and the railing are similar to those in
both the Larkin house and the subject house. Notably, the entrance has a classical treatment,
with simplified pilasters and a profiled cornice. Although the Cooper Adobe’s entrance has no
details in common with those on the subject house, both are classical in treatment.
In her book A Field Guide to American Houses (2015), Virginia Savage McAlester shows
photographs of four Monterey-type houses with balconies, plus drawings of style details, in her
chapter on the Spanish Colonial style (pages 191-195). Some of the aspects, she says, were
Anglo-influenced, namely, placing the porches on the exterior of the house (instead of in an inner
courtyard), the use of delicate porch posts, and classically-derived entrance details.
The Monterey style experienced a revival, especially in California, a century after its initial
occurrence. The style was applied mainly to larger houses (though not mansions) in wealthier
neighborhoods. McAlester includes a short chapter on this revival in her book (pages 536-540)
and gives its dates as 1925-1955. All of the examples she shows are two stories in height and
have balconies that are cantilevered from the second floor. Most of the examples shown in
McAlester are freer adaptations of the original Monterey style than the subject house is, though a
few have porch posts and railings that are fairly close in appearance to the original, and to those
on the subject house.
Integrity
The two primary facades of this house, the front and south sides, appear to be unaltered, except
in the second story, where wooden second story window sash were replaced by new sash. This
new sash replicates the six-over-six pattern of the original, maintains a reveal between the upper
and lower parts of the sash, and has some profiling. Almost all of the rear of this house and the
north side have been obscured by post-1950 additions. Regarding landscaping: while the oak
tree in the front yard is clearly old, it is not clear that the general landscape design of this yard
dates to the house’s early years. The landscaping of the back yard has clearly changed a great
deal as a result of the swimming pool, the new garage, and the brick patio.
Each of the seven areas of integrity are discussed below:
Location. The house has not been moved, so it retains integrity of location.
Design. The design of the two primary facades (front and south) are unchanged, so the house
retains integrity of design.
Materials. On the two primary facades, all of the original exterior materials remain in place,
except for the window sash in the upper story. These materials — clapboard siding in the first
story, brick above, and a wooden balcony — retain their original surface texture. Overall, the
house retains integrity of materials.
10
9.A. - Page 79 of 247
337
