The preservation and designation of the <br />historical structure is significant for the following reasons: the people who were associated with it; the architectural style and <br />condition; and the importance of its location to other historical structures on Main Street <br />The Offerman House is of prime historic importance in San Mateo County, being directly connected with a family having <br />pioneer status. John Offerman came to Redwood City in 1858 at the age of 26 and remained a resident until his death in 1902. <br />He served as the County Treasurer for two terms during which B.G. Lathrop was County Recorder and Supervisor. John <br />Offerman also established the first Masonic Order between San Francisco and San Jose. He operated two general stores and a <br />brewery in Redwood City. Three generations of the Offerman family remained in the house until 1972, spanning a period of <br />almost 90 years. The house was built in 1857 as the first building in the Heller tract by E. Hancock. It was purchased by John <br />and Joanna Offerman in 1889 when it was remodeled. <br />SEE CONTINUATION SHEET20.
