approximately 50 properties based on their significance and vulnerability. At that time, the
Committee prioritized eight properties for landmark designation and Mills Act contracts.
One (1800 Whipple Avenue) has since been landmarked initiated by its owner; the other
seven remain strong candidates. I will also note that ranking number 9, the Demma/Main
Cash market, I believe is slated for demolition due to a HRAC determination negating the
previous historic evaluation of the property and the J. B. Perry Fuel and Feed Yard
Warehouse has been demolished, due to a similar situation.
Failing to engage in this essential work undermines the relevance and effectiveness of the
HRAC. I respectfully urge the Committee to amend the FY2025–2027 Work Plan to
explicitly include initiating historic landmark designations as a standing activity. The
attached list can serve as an immediate starting point for this important work.
I offer this recommendation in the spirit of constructive support for the Committee’s
mission and our city’s heritage. Please feel free to call me at (650) 368-0805 if you have
questions or would like to discuss this further.
Sincerely,
Ken Rolandelli
HRAC Member Emeritus
