<br />Honoring Maria Fernanda Mella .gena
<br />Co -Outstanding Student Awardee
<br />WHEREAS, the City of Redwood City proudly recognizes the extraordinary achievements and service of
<br />young leaders who demonstrate compassion, initiative, and a commitment to uplifting others; and
<br />WHEREAS, Maria Fernanda Mellado Pena, a distinguished student at Crystal Springs Uplands School,
<br />has exemplified academic excellence, leadership, and a deep dedication to community service; and
<br />WHEREAS, Maria began her journey in volunteerism by sharing her passion for STEM and music with
<br />young students in under -resourced communities, serving as a Teacher Assistant with Peninsula Bridge,
<br />where for two summers she supported middle school students in math and English and was inspired by the
<br />spark of understanding in their eyes; and
<br />WHEREAS, Maria has played a leadership role in her school's Science for Causes Club, co facilitating
<br />engaging science presentations for underserved communities across the Peninsula, making complex
<br />scientific concepts both accessible and exciting for young learners; and
<br />WHEREAS, Maria has generously volunteered as a guest STEM teacher at the Redwood City Public
<br />Library, guiding students through hands-on science activities and STEMkits, believing that early exposure
<br />to science can empower youth and open doors to future opportunities; and
<br />WHEREAS, Maria's passion for music has also served as a catalyst for community engagement,
<br />performing with her school band at numerous school and community events, including the annual Music in
<br />the Mansion concert, with the San Carlos Children's Theater Pit Orchestra, at local venues, and with the
<br />Stanford Jazz Program, inspiring other young Latinos to pursue music and the arts; and
<br />WHEREAS, Maria's commitment to service extends into her home, where she leads by example for her
<br />younger siblings, supports them in their studies, and tutors her parents as they pursue ESL and GED
<br />coursework at Canada College; and
<br />WHEREAS, inspired by the medical professionals who once saved her father's life, Maria aspires to
<br />pursue studies in Public Health and a career in medicine, continuing her dedication to improving the well-
<br />being of others.
<br />NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT I, ELMER MARTINEZ SABALLOS, MAYOR OF
<br />REDWOOD CITY, on behalf of the City Council and the people of the City of Redwood City, do hereby
<br />recognize and honor Maria Fernanda Mellado Pena as a Co—Outstanding Student Awardee, commending
<br />her leadership, compassion, and unwavering commitment to education, family, and community service.
<br />BE IT FURTHER PROCLAIMED that Redwood City celebrates Maria's remarkable achievements and
<br />looks forward to the positive impact she will continue to make in the fields of STEM, public health, and
<br />beyond.
