<br />Alternatives to Plastic in Public Spaces <br />Biodiverse, natural solutions for landscaping, playgrounds, dog parks, <br />gathering areas and sports fields <br /> <br />Arcadia Ballpark in Evergreen San Jose, CA, with natural grass baseball diamonds, 2025. <br />(Photo courtesy of SE Hinton) <br />The Impact <br />Reducing plastic use in outdoor public spaces can prevent long-term microplastic pollution, <br />reduce heat exposure, support biodiversity and align municipal projects with climate and <br />water-conservation goals. <br />Because artificial turf and other plastic-based surfaces shed microplastics that cannot be <br />effectively removed from the environment, replacing them with natural and organically managed <br />alternatives helps stop pollution at the source. Natural alternatives can also reduce surface <br />temperatures, support soil health, conserve water when properly designed, and create more ecologically <br />functional spaces for communities. <br />Cities that adopt biodiverse landscaping and natural field management approaches can reduce <br />long-term environmental harm while maintaining usable, attractive, and resilient public spaces. Research <br />published in Nature - Scientific Reports in 2024 underscores the lasting value of biodiverse public <br />spaces, revealing that environments rich in natural features significantly boost mental health.
