Equipment Type: 5.56mm Semiautomatic Rifles and Ammunition - CA Gov’t Code <br />§7070(c)(10) <br />Equipment: Patrol Rifle – 5.56mm Semi-Automatic <br />Quantity Owned/Authorized: 88 <br />owned/authorized <br />Lifespan: Approximately 15 years <br />Equipment Capabilities: The patrol rifle is a gas operated, magazine fed semi-automatic rifle <br />capable of firing a .223 Remington/5.56mm NATO projectile bullet. <br />Manufacturer Product Description: The patrol rifle is a lightweight, magazine fed, gas- <br />operated, air-cooled, shoulder-fired rifle using a semi-auto firing system chambered in .223 <br />Remington/5.56 NATO with a barrel length of 16.5". These rifles are equipped with lights <br />and optic aiming systems. There are several authorized makes and models of the patrol rifle, <br />all of which are functionally the same and meet the same description and specifications. The <br />following models are currently used by sworn officers: Colt LE/CR6920 (75), LWRC M61C <br />(1); Daniel Defense DDM4 (9), Noveske N4 (1); Smith and Wesson MP15 (1),BCM BCM4 (1). <br />Purpose/Authorized Uses: The patrol rifle is authorized for use by all sworn officers who <br />have been department trained and successfully qualified with it. Officers may deploy the rifle <br />in any circumstance where the officer can articulate a reasonable expectation that the rifle <br />may be needed. Examples of some general guidelines for deploying the patrol rifle may <br />include but are not limited to: <br />1.Situations where the officer reasonably anticipates an armed encounter. <br />2.When an officer is faced with a situation that may require accurate and effective fire at <br />long range. <br />3.Situations where an officer reasonably expects the need to meet or exceed a <br />suspect's firepower. <br />4.When an officer reasonably believes that there may be a need to fire on a barricaded <br />person or a person with a hostage. <br />5.When an officer reasonably believes that a suspect may be wearing body armor. <br />6.When authorized or requested by a supervisor. <br />Fiscal Impacts: Initial cost of the rifles was approximately $1500 per rifle. The Department <br />purchased six additional rifles in 2023 to ensure all trained sworn staff have a rifle issued to <br />them personally. The purchase cost was $5,891.00. Ammunition costs will vary annually and <br />are detailed in the Annual Military Equipment Use Report available on the Department <br />website. <br />Legal/Procedural Rules Governing Use: All applicable State, Federal and Local laws <br />governing police use of force. Various Redwood City Police Department Policies on Use of <br />Force and Firearms. <br />Training Required: Officers must successfully complete a CA POST certified 24-hour patrol <br />rifle course as well as yearly department firearms training and qualifications as required by <br />law and policy. <br />Other Notes: The patrol rifle was first authorized for use in 2013. <br />REV: 04-07-26 VR
