Recognizing <br />The FIFA World Cup 26™ <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the FIFA World Cup 26™ will bring together nations, cultures, and <br />communities from around the world in a global celebration of sport, unity, and international <br />friendship coinciding with our nation’s 250th anniversary; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the San Francisco Bay Area has been selected as a host region for FIFA World <br />Cup 26™, one of the largest sporting events in history, bringing worldwide attention and <br />significant cultural and economic activity to the region; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the City of Redwood City values opportunities that foster community pride, <br />cultural exchange, economic vitality, and regional collaboration; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Redwood City has a longstanding commitment to fostering international <br />friendship and cultural understanding, including through its sister city relationships with <br />Zhuhai, China; Colima, Mexico; Ciudad Guzmán, Mexico; and Aguililla, Mexico; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, soccer plays an important role in bringing together Redwood City residents of <br />all backgrounds and generations, including the many local youth who participate in <br />recreational and community soccer programs; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Redwood City has a long tradition of welcoming residents and visitors of all <br />backgrounds and celebrating events that strengthen community connection and civic <br />engagement; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the City Council recognizes that the FIFA World Cup represents more than an <br />athletic competition, serving as an opportunity to celebrate diversity, inclusion, and the <br />unifying power of sport across cultures and generations; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the City Council further recognizes the significance of this international event <br />to the Bay Area region and wishes to express Redwood City’s support for community <br />celebration and regional participation surrounding the tournament; <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT I, ELMER MARTÍNEZ SABALLOS, <br />MAYOR OF REDWOOD CITY on behalf of the City Council, do hereby recognizes FIFA <br />World Cup 26™ and, to commemorate “30 Days to Kickoff” of the FIFA World Cup 26™, <br />authorizes the temporary raising and display of the FIFA World Cup 26™ flag in <br />accordance with the City’s adopted flag policy. <br /> <br />Date: May 11, 2026 <br /> <br />7.A. - Page 7 of 7 <br />13
