The City
has secured a viewing license to be able to have public viewings on Courthouse Square, and staff are
preparing event plans for viewing parties and other activations throughout Downtown.
The City Council has proclaimed that FIFA World Cup 26TM represents more than just an athletic
competition; it will bring together nations, cultures, and communities from around the world to celebrate
sport, unity and international friendship.
ANALYSIS
Soccer plays an important role in bringing together Redwood City residents of all backgrounds and
generations, including the many local youth who participate in recreational and community soccer
programs. The City has a long tradition of welcoming residents and visitors of all backgrounds and
celebrating events that strengthen community connection and civic engagement.
As an international sporting event, the FIFA World Cup 26™ is features teams from 48 countries, the
largest number ever to participate. Redwood City is home to a diverse immigrant community, many of
whom will head Downtown to partake in City fan fests and viewing parties for their teams. The City
recognizes the significance of this international event and wishes to express Redwood City’s support for
community celebration and regional participation.
The City has an Administrative Policy that authorizes the display of non-governmental flags upon approval
of the City Council by resolution. Such authorization can be made in conjunction with official actions,
ceremonial items, or proclamations of the City Council.
The display of the FIFA World Cup 26TM would be displayed to commemorate “30 Days to Kickoff”, a
Regional Flag Raising Event on May 12, 2026, hosted by the City and the Bay Area Host Committee. The
City of Redwood City would retain the flag and additionally fly it for the duration of the FIFA World Cup
26TM.
The attached resolution (Attachment A) authorizes the display of the FIFA World Cup 26TM flag on May 12,
2026, and from June 11, 2026, through July 19, 2026.
EQUITY IMPACT STATEMENT
All City actions are assessed for impact. Because this item is on the consent calendar, this section indicates
assessment process, not findings.
