Learn why this isimportant
Dear City Council of Redwood City,
I am writing in strong support of the proposed ordinance to strengthen Redwood
City’s tobacco retailer rules and enforcement. BACHAC’s mission is to eliminate
health disparities across generations and diverse communities through education
and services, with a particular focus on reducing the effects of health concerns that
disproportionately affect communities of color. Stronger tobacco retailer oversight is
consistent with that mission because flavored tobacco and youth nicotine addiction
continue to worsen health inequities for families already facing disproportionate
health burdens.
Redwood City’s action is especially important because stronger local enforcement
can help reduce youth access to flavored tobacco products and other illegal sales.
San Mateo County’s updated ordinance increased penalties for retailers that sell
tobacco to minors, and Redwood City’s existing flavored tobacco rules already
reflect the City’s recognition that these products pose a serious risk to young
people.
I respectfully urge you to adopt this ordinance to help protect youth, support
healthier families, and advance health equity in Redwood City.
Sincerely
Shawneece
____________________________________
Shawneece Stevenson, MSW, ACC, RFPI
Co-Manager, Resilience and Mental Wellness Initiative
www.bachac.org/community-assessment
Bay Area Community Health Advisory Council
sstevenson@bachac.org | www.bachac.org |NEW OFFICE: 1670 South Amphlett
Blvd. Suite 105, San Mateo, CA 94402
Mailing: 204 East 2nd Avenue #720, San Mateo, CA 94401
(office.) 650-204-1611
