EXHIBIT A PROPOSED AMENDED JOB DESCRIPTION CITY OF REDWOOD CITY ASSISTANT CITY ATTORNEY/ SENIOR ASSISTANT CITY ATTORNEY/ CHIEF ASSISTANT CITY ATTORNEY DEFINITION Under general direction of the City Attorney, assists in administering all phases of City legal work. Performs specialized and complex legal work in connection with more significant legal problems or in a critical specialty area. Assists in the legal representation of the City Council, its Agencies, Boards and Commissions, the City Manager and City departments. Performs related work as assigned. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS This is a flexibly staffed position, with incumbents assigned to the appropriate level based on overall related legal experience and demonstrated proficiency in a local government setting. The Chief Assistant City Attorney is distinguished from the Senior Assistant City Attorney by being a practicing attorney who also assists the City Attorney in managing and directing the operations of the City Attorney's Office and acts as the City Attorney in their absence. The Senior Assistant City Attorney is distinguished from the Assistant City Attorney by a higher degree of experience within a municipal government setting, the ability to handle the most complex and/or high profile legal matters, and as acts as the City Attorney in his or hertheir absence. SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED Assistant City Attorney Direction is provided by the City Attorney. May provide lead supervision to Deputy City Attorneys, and direct or indirect supervision of administrative support staff as well as outside counsel. Senior Assistant City Attorney Direction is provided by the City Attorney. May provide lead supervision of Assistant City Attorneys, and direct or indirect supervision of Deputy City Attorneys, administrative support staff, and/or outside counsel.
