Santa Rosa Police Chief Tom Schwedhelm <br /> <br />Santa Rosa Fire Chief Bruce Varner told the press about the devastation his department has <br />experienced in recent years due to the havoc the economic downturn has had on revenues. He <br />explained that the state's continual raid of local funds puts public safety at risk. <br /> <br />"We've had to eliminate a large number of police and fire positions in the last two years because <br />of budget cuts," said Varner. "Losing additional funds to Sacramento could mean longer response <br />times, fewer officers on the streets, and many other cuts that will even further impact the public <br />safety in our community.
