Thr. huilding was conslrllclrd in <br />10i1(l and was previously used hy the Police Athletic League. <br />Today, the ~F'L Alumni Nort,hern CaliFornia Chapter rent.s the <br />huilding for t.hf~iI' h('acJquarl.ers. The NFL Alumni opf~['ale~ a <br />charit.ahle ol'ganization focused on "caring for ki(jf;". pl'OITIoting <br />youth sports, and providing support for N F'L alllm~. In alldil,ion <br />to oHlce and meeting space the building houses the J\orlhcm <br />California Chapter NFL Alumni Museum. <br /> <br />It. is recommended that the huilding he demolished and efforts <br />hf. made 1.0 develop a Finanr.ial partnership with the Nort.hp,rn <br />California Chapt.er NFL Alumni to relocate t,heir operaLlon and <br />museum to the new center, <br /> <br />Community "'ellness Center - The linnex <br /> <br />The Community Wellness Center (the Annex) is a 21 ,32G <br />square foot. t.wo-story wood-framed lJuilding, The original <br />building was a residential structure t.hat was converted in <br />t 956 into the Redwood City Training Headquarters for the San <br />Francisco 4ge['s football team, In t 988. the team moved from <br />Redwood City 1,0 a new training facility in Santa Clara. Since <br />1994 the building has served as an annex to the VMSC. With <br />the exception of modifications to make the building accessible <br />under the American's with Disabilities Act (ADA), which <br />included the addition of an elevat.or, t.he building remains <br />relatively unchanged, The faCility currently houses a fitness <br />room with cardiovascular and weight. equipment.. wellness <br /> <br />THE <br />SPOrts Management <br />11_. There <br />are. also operational inefficiencies and costs associated with <br />managing and monituring a Reparatl' huilding. Prom the <br />lIser perspective. tilt' programs in the Community Wt~nn{'~s <br />Cenll'r are isolated from the activit.y and synt'rgy of the <br />Sl'nior Cent.er. The demolition of this llUilding <br />c['eates opport.unities for improved siting of new faciliti('~. <br />site circulation. ane! parking. <br /> <br />V(~Lerans 111emoriaJ Senior Center (Vi\1SC) <br />and Resource Center <br /> <br />The Veterans Memorial Commission constructed the building <br />that currently hOllses the Senior Center in t 956. From 1956 <br />until 1982 t.he Center was operat.ed as a meeting and social <br />center for veterans and was available as public meeting <br />space, In t 971 the responsibility for administration of t.he <br />building was delegat.ed to the Redwood City Recreation <br />Department. In 1982 the building was rededicated by the <br />City's Park and Recreat.ion Department as t.he Veterans <br />~lemorial Senior Center. This venerable center has served the <br />community well over it.s 53 years of operation, Through the <br />years, the center has undergone an addition, renovations and <br />remodeling to repurpose spaces to bett.er serve community <br />needs and interests. The center is now outdated and lacks <br />the infrast.ructure, space. design. and amenities necessary <br />to sel've the current users or the growing population of older <br />adults and should be replaced with a next generation facility. <br /> <br />The Senior Affairs Commission developed an extensive listing <br />of the CUI'rent deficiencies of the existing center that can <br />be found in the Appendix of this repOI't.
