6.11 Pa e 1 REPORT To the Honorable Mayor and City Council From the Cit Mana er April 26, 2010 SUBJECT Amendment to Hidden Villa contract with Redwood City to provide environmental science enrichment programs in local schools RECOMMENDATION By motion, approve Amendment No.1 to the contract with Hidden Villa and authorize the City Manager to execute the amended contract. BACKGROUND The City of Redwood City and Redwood City 2020 received funding in the fall of 2009 to support environmental education efforts for youth at schools and within the community. As part of this effort, the City entered into a contract with Hidden Villa on November 3, 2009, to implement science enrichment activities at Kennedy Middle School, and Sequoia and Redwood High Schools. The original contract of $59,500 was authorized and executed by the City Manager. This contract amendment brings the total contract amount above $60 ,000, requiring that the contract amendment be brought to City Council for approval. The City of Redwood City has been working together with Redwood City 2020 and Hidden Villa, a non-profit education organization, to offer environmental science enrichment and garden education on school campuses serving Redwood City youth. As part of this effort, Hidden Villa has been implementing a number of programs including H.Y.P.E. (H~w Youth Perceive the Environment) Program. In the program, high school students are researching the barriers that prevent local youth from spending more time engaged in outdoor activities and wilt be developing recommendations for how to increase youth participation. As part of the contract amendment, Hidden Villa will also be providing technical expertise to the Redwood City Verde Youth Ambassador program this summer. Hidden Villa's contract is being amended and increased by $15,000, bringing the total to $74,500. ALTERNATIVES The Council could chose not to amend the existing contract with Hidden Villa. FISCAL IMPACT Funding for these efforts has been provided by the Silicon Valley Community Foundation as part of Redwood City's focus on youth development and climate protection. The contract amendment is funded with a grant from the Silicon Valley Community Foundation that has been secured specifically for this purpose. Revenues in the amount of $125,000 have been received by the Silicon Valley Co.mmunity Foundation for Redwood City's environmental youth efforts and have been included in the approved fiscal year 2009-2010 City Manager Department budget.
