<br />6.11 <br />Pa e 1 <br /> <br />REPORT <br /> <br />To the Honorable Mayor and City Council <br />From the Cit Mana er <br /> <br />April 26, 2010 <br /> <br />SUBJECT <br />Amendment to Hidden Villa contract with Redwood City to provide environmental <br />science enrichment programs in local schools <br /> <br />RECOMMENDATION <br />By motion, approve Amendment No.1 to the contract with Hidden Villa and authorize <br />the City Manager to execute the amended contract. <br /> <br />BACKGROUND <br />The City of Redwood City and Redwood City 2020 received funding in the fall of 2009 to <br />support environmental education efforts for youth at schools and within the community. <br />As part of this effort, the City entered into a contract with Hidden Villa on November 3, <br />2009, to implement science enrichment activities at Kennedy Middle School, and <br />Sequoia and Redwood High Schools. The original contract of $59,500 was authorized <br />and executed by the City Manager. This contract amendment brings the total contract <br />amount above $60 ,000, requiring that the contract amendment be brought to City <br />Council for approval. <br /> <br />The City of Redwood City has been working together with Redwood City 2020 and <br />Hidden Villa, a non-profit education organization, to offer environmental science <br />enrichment and garden education on school campuses serving Redwood City youth. <br />As part of this effort, Hidden Villa has been implementing a number of programs <br />including H.Y.P.E. (H~w Youth Perceive the Environment) Program. In the program, <br />high school students are researching the barriers that prevent local youth from spending <br />more time engaged in outdoor activities and wilt be developing recommendations for <br />how to increase youth participation. As part of the contract amendment, Hidden Villa <br />will also be providing technical expertise to the Redwood City Verde Youth Ambassador <br />program this summer. <br /> <br />Hidden Villa's contract is being amended and increased by $15,000, bringing the total to <br />$74,500. <br /> <br />ALTERNATIVES <br />The Council could chose not to amend the existing contract with Hidden Villa. <br /> <br />FISCAL IMPACT <br /> <br />Funding for these efforts has been provided by the Silicon Valley Community <br />Foundation as part of Redwood City's focus on youth development and climate <br />protection. The contract amendment is funded with a grant from the Silicon Valley <br />Community Foundation that has been secured specifically for this purpose. Revenues <br />in the amount of $125,000 have been received by the Silicon Valley Co.mmunity <br />Foundation for Redwood City's environmental youth efforts and have been included in <br />the approved fiscal year 2009-2010 City Manager Department budget. <br />
