i\.Ar
SITE OF THE MONTH: DEVELOPMENT REPORT CARD OF THE STATES
Our site of the month for January is the latest update of an old favorite: The Corporation for Enter-
prise Development, (CFED), updated Development Report Card of the States. CFED gives each state
a letter grade (A through F) for its standing in three broad areas: economic performance, business
vitality, and development capacity. Each index has a series of sub - indices as well. (Full disclosure:
EconData.Net co-editor Andrew Reamer annually works on this report). One thing we particularly like
about the report card is its transparency: the data is clearly laid out for the reader to see. Even better:
the site gives users the option of drilling down to compare states based on any one or more of the 71
indicators used to prepare the report card.
The website is well laid out. You can look at a grade summary for any particular state, rank states
according to any indicator, and quickly find the data sources (most with a hyperlink to the sources
website) and an explanation of the methodology. This is a model of how to do rankings.
