Recommendation By motion, authorize the execution of a contract with the Sequoia Union High School I� District to provide a School Resource Officer four days a week a# Sequoia High School for the school year 2010 -2011. The School District agrees to compensate the City of Redwood City$30,0�0.00 for these services. Background Since the fall of 2000, the Redwood City Police Department has, pursuant to contract, provided a School Resource �fficer full-time at Sequoia High School. This position is funded on a partnership basis with the police officer's salary being partially supported by the school district for the nine months that school is in session. The School Resource Officer has been involved in a variety of activities that enhance the safeiy on campus and provide a positive police presence for the students and staff. The school staff and teachers are able to utilize the officer for resolving any issues that arise. The officer helps to supervise sporting events and attends other school functions that allow for the interaction with students in a positive manner. The overall quality of life for the students and teachers has been improved with a safer school en�ironment. � The School District has requested an officer for the 2010 -2011 school year. The contract covers the period from July 1, 2014 through June 30, 2011. The total cost for services is $88,740.00. By mutual agreement, the Sequoia Union High Schoo[ District will make a single payment of$30,000.00 to offset the cost of providing an officer. Existing police personnel resources are being utilized to provide this service, and the officer position already exists in the approved Police Department budget. Alternatives Council could decline to enter into the contract and a full-time School Resource Officer would not be assigned to Sequoia High School. A regularly scheduled patrol officer would attend to all calls for service associated with the high school. Fiscal Impact The Sequoia Union High School District agrees to pay$30,000 into the City of Redwood City general fund.
