<br />... <br />- J <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />DES:yc:12/l6/68 <br /> <br />ORIGINAt <br /> <br />OEe 16 1lfI <br /> <br />RES 0 L UTI 0 N <br />---------- <br /> <br />No.SR~~ <br /> <br />RESOLUTION SUPPORTING ACTION TAKEN BY CERTAIN <br />COLLEGE AUTHORITIES IN QUELLING DISTURBANCES <br /> <br />WHEREAS, certain civil disturbances recently have occurred <br /> <br />on the campuses of San Francisco State College, the College of <br /> <br />San Mateo, and other public properties; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, said disturbances have resulted in serious personal <br /> <br />injury and property damage in the thousands of dollars; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, said disturbances are caused by a minority of <br /> <br />citizens who have resorted to violence and destruction to express <br /> <br />their opinions and ideas; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the democracy within which we live provides for <br /> <br />the free and unhampered expression of opinions and ideas without <br /> <br />resorting to such violence and destruction, and the use of such <br /> <br />violence and destruction endangers the very principle of freedom <br /> <br />of expression; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, S. I. Hayakawa, President of San Francisco State <br /> <br />College, and Robert Ewigleben, President of the College of San <br /> <br />Mateo, have taken stern measures to quell the disturbances, <br /> <br />violence, and destruction aforesaid; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, members of the Police Department of the City of <br /> <br />Redwood City have been called upon under the City's mutual aid <br /> <br />arrangement with neighboring communities to assist the afore- <br /> <br />mentioned college authorities in quelling said disturbances, <br /> <br />violence, and destruction; <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE; <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDWOOD CITY, <br /> <br />AS FOLLOWS: <br /> <br />That this Council hereby signifies its support of, and <br /> <br />endorses, the actions taken by Presidents Hayakawa and Ewigleben <br />
