The
new organization brings approximately 193,500
labor members to the effort of protecting local
services from state budget cuts.
Participants of both labor and cities have been
meeting for approximately 6 months to develop a
means of working together on the goal of protecting
local services. They were able to come together
under the following mission statement:
Organized Labor and Local Governments agree
to work together with other advocates to lobby
California State Government to protect local gov-
ernment services and revenues, and jobs with fair
wages and benefits. To miss that deadline,
said Assemblywoman Lynn Daucher, R -Brea, a
former school board member and member of the
bipartisan group, would be "criminal" because local
governments need the state's plans to write their
own budgets.
Los Angeles Daily News, 2127/03 - Hahn
warns of service cuts, layoffs: As state officials
grapple with a projected $34.6 billion deficit, Mayor
James Hahn renewed a warning Wednesday that
Los Angeles would face cuts in services — and
possible layoffs — if local government loses the
$175 million it now receives in vehicle license fees.
"If the state removes that fee, we would be talking
about the possibility of layoffs. It's something we
are trying to avoid, but we may have no choice.
And, I think there is no question that some city
services are going to be affected this coming year.
We may not be able to pave as many roadway
miles as we planned or trim as many trees or
expand library hours because of the economy. If
the state pulls the rug from under us, we will be
facing a whole new ballgame."
PAGE 8 /PRIORITY FOCUS Visit the League's Official Web Site- -www.cacities.org
