There is a fear of rejection similar to that faced by the service men and <br />women who served in Vietnam. She asked that we support the service men and <br />women fighting for our freedom by displaying yellow ribbons throughout Redwood City <br />without a restraint. <br />Angela Olcese stated that her son is a reservist in Iraq and that she spoke in San <br />Francisco when the resolution was proposed. She stated that if a picture could be sent <br />with yellow ribbons displayed in her and others' sons' hometown of Redwood City it <br />would make them very happy. <br />Captain Theodore Wong, the officer in charge in San Bruno for these deployed <br />Marines, stated that just in this community there are 200. He stated that he was asked <br />to come and propose a resolution to accept and display yellow ribbons in support of <br />the troops. He stated that the Yellow Ribbon Campaign is in no way a reflection of the <br />City's support of the war. It is actually a direct support of the troops and they need the <br />support to know that people are behind them and that they are doing a good job. He <br />stated that the young men and women are showing what they have learned with their <br />integrity, dependability, judgment, justice and by supporting each other. <br />Mike Spence stated that although he had been asked to present the proposal over a <br />week ago, it is more important than ever now. He stated that we must find a politically <br />correct way to show support and that Redwood City is truly a hometown to America's <br />new heroes. He stated that he is proud and honored to present the resolution and <br />knows that the Council cannot act on this because it is not on the agenda. He asked <br />that the time and thought be given to ensure that these particular people who are <br />risking their lives in parts of the world to bring freedom to those who need it most are <br />recognized in this city. <br />Council Member Hartnett stated that his suggestion is for Mayor Claire to appoint a <br />subcommittee to make a recommendation to the Council on this subject. Mayor Claire <br />appointed Council Members Hartnett and Pierce to an ad hoc committee to bring a <br />recommendation back to Council for consideration. <br />Nano Maldonado proposed displaying a big yellow ribbon on his billboards in <br />Redwood City. <br />6.
