q-0-1 REPORT To the Honorable Mayor and City Council From the City Manager April 28, 2003 Subject Appreciation for the armed forces of the United States, declaration of "Yellow Ribbon Month," City display of yellow ribbons, and encouragement of the community to honor our armed forces. Recommendation Approve the attached resolution declaring Redwood City's appreciation to the United States armed forces, proclaiming in their honor the month of May, 2003 as "Yellow Ribbon Month," directing the City Manager to place yellow ribbons on City property in Redwood City's central business retail district for the duration of May, 2003, and encouraging the residents and businesses in Redwood City to support our armed forces. Background The men and women of the United States armed forces are in the thoughts of many people in Redwood City and throughout the entire country at this time. With the national Memorial Day holiday at the end of May, this is an opportune time for the City to express its appreciation and gratitude to the individuals serving in our armed forces for their sacrifice and dedication in protecting the ideals of freedom and democracy, no matter where they serve throughout the world. The City's gesture of proclaiming May, 2003 as "Yellow Ribbon Month," and its encouragement of the residents and businesses to show their support, will send the message to our armed forces that people here are thinking of them, and wishing them a safe return home. Alternative 1. The City Council could choose not to adopt the attached resolution, and thereby not overtly express its support and gratitude to our armed forces. Fiscal Impact Adoption of this resolution will have negligible fiscal impact to the City.
