9A -a2
LOCAL UPDATE
In addition to this week's highly successful
Legislative Action Days, LOCAL coalition partners
continued to cant' out activities in communities
throughout the state. A few of them are described
below.
Grassroots Activities
More than 110 people attended the Peninsula
Division's Legislative Day Lunch last week at the
Sterling Hotel. League President John
Russo presented Senator Jackie Speier with the
"Legislator of the Year' plaque. 'This is a very
special award that means a lot to me ", Senator
Speier told the gathering. Luncheon speaker Diane
Cummins, Chief Fiscal Policy Advisor to Senator
John Burton, provided an in -depth analysis of the
Governor's budget revise. Many of those in atten-
dance traveled to Sacramento on chartered buses to
participate in the LOCAL Coalition Rally and legislator
visits.
An overview of the proposed and potential cuts
still floating in legislative proposals that could
affect local government were discussed in detail at
press meeting in the inland Empire. The perspec-
tive of the County, contract police chief, the city
manager and the special districts fire chief all con-
curred, that local government has only lean muscle
left. Everyone agreed the Inland Empire is experi-
encing extreme growth, calling for more infrastruc-
ture and services, not less. Reporter David Drucker
of the Daily Bulletin expressed interest in the ongoing
growth of the LOCAL Coalition. The state Legisla-
ture is in urgent need to come to terms, in a timely
manner, with solutions. Hits to local governmental
services will serve only to cause added activism by
those constituents of our local communities.
The Merced Sun -Star did a story on May
Revise and reported on local government's reaction
and what the future holds for the City of Merced.
Merced's City Manager Jim Marshall and Council
Members Bill Spriggs and Rick Osorio were all
quoted.
A reporter from Coast Weekly drove to Sacra-
mento and spent the entire day with the Monterey
Bay delegation. Jessica Lyons began the day at
the Division's press conference, attended lobby
visits with and stopped by the League's special
assembly session.
The Santa Cruz Sentinel spoke on the phone
with a couple of local officials while they were in
Sacramento to gauge their reaction to the
Govemor's may revise.
Supervisor Potter from Monterey County
also spoke to a local radio station on his way home
from Sacramento on behalf of the LOCAL coalition.
See Also: "The Budqet Story — Press Quotes ,, ,
for samples of press coverage over the past week.
LOOKING FOR CALIFORNIA'S BEST TO
FILL A POSITION IN YOUR CITY?
Western City Magazine's job opportunity
section is the source for job seekers looking for
positions in local government.
