REPORT
June 9, 2003
Subject
Agreement with the John W
the Agreement Establishing
MIA
To the Honorable Mayor and City Council
From the City Manager
Gardner Center / Stanford University; Amendment No.1 to
RC 2020
Recommendation
Authorize the City Manager to Execute the Agreement between Redwood City 2020 (RC
2020), through its fiscal agent the City of Redwood City, and the John W. Gardner Center/
Stanford University (Gardner Center) for a portion of fiscal year 2002/2003 and for fiscal
year 2003/2004, and approve Amendment No. 1 to the agreement establishing Redwood
City 2020.
Background
The City of Redwood City, in partnership with the Redwood City School District, the
Sequoia Union High School District, and the County of San Mateo, formed Redwood City
2000 in 1995. In 2000, the organization's name was changed to Redwood City 2020. The
partners have been jointly funding Redwood City 2020 since 1995, and the City of
Redwood City acts as the fiscal agent for the collaborative.
In the summer of 2002, the Gardner Center agreed to become a funding partner and
participate in the governance of the Redwood City 2020 collaborative. The purpose of this
partnership is to help fund the operations of Redwood City 2020 and to support the
participation of our partners in the Gardner Center Academy for Community Youth
Development.
This collaborative will expand the resources we have available in the community for youth
development. As a result of this agreement, Stanford resources, such as research to
improve programs and services for young people, will be made available to Redwood City
2020.
In order to execute this agreement, Amendment No. 1 must be approved so that the
Gardner Center Director may participate in and be a member of the RC 2020 Operations
and Coordinating Council.
Alternative
Council may choose not to authorize the City Manager to execute this agreement, or
not approve the Amendment No. 1 as Redwood City 2020's fiscal agent.
D-1
Fiscal Impact
Funding for the program has been granted by the Gardner Center to cover the cost of
this agreement. No City funds will be used for this effort. The City is serving as "pass
through" to RC 2020 for funds awarded.
